17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers
17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers is the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media available from the British Library. It charts the development of newspapers, from irregularly published transcriptions of Parliamentary debates, to newspapers similar to today, and includes more than 1,000 pamphlets, proclamations, newsbooks and papers. Gathered by Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817), a notable scholar, the collection covers more than 200 years of accounts, explanations and points of views, and includes English provincial, Irish and Scottish papers and a handful from British colonies in the Americas and Asia.

19th Century UK Periodicals Part 1
19th Century UK Periodicals covers the events, lives, values and themes that shaped 19th century Britain, providing an invaluable, fully-searchable facsimile resource for the study of British life in the 1800s. Part I, New Readerships: Women’s, Children’s, Humour and Leisure/Sport marks the advent of commercial lifestyle publishing in Britain and charts the rapid rise of modern magazine culture. The political spectrum of women’s writing, from Hearth and Home to the Women’s Penny Paper, offer evidence of women’s changing status, whilst the rapid increase of publications devoted to children’s entertainment and education, illustrated with Boy’s Own Paper and Good Words for the Young, also reveal a great deal about social development in the 1800s. Few of the materials in this extensive online collection have ever been reissued, in any format since original publication. All the original colour work has been specially captured for this programme.

19th Century British Library Newspapers Parts 1 & 2

Developed by Gale in partnership with the British Library and JISC, 19th Century British Library Newspapers offers full runs of national, regional and local 19th century British newspapers, from the holdings of the British Library. Selected to reflect the social and political developments of the 19th century, and provide a broad yet detailed view of British life during these years, the archive includes 71 titles, totalling approximately 3.2 million pages. Part II increases the range of English regional newspapers found in Part I and expands the range of political views represented, enabling researchers to see an event from a number of contrasting perspectives More significant towns are featured, including Nottingham, Bradford, Leicester, Sheffield and York; whilst the selection of predominantly liberal, left-of-centre publications in Part I are balanced in Part II by The Standard and the Morning Post which generally represented conservative opinions.
