British Library Newspapers17th and 18th Century Burney Collections Newspapers and 19th Century British Library NewspapersBritish Library Newspapers consists of two major collections from the British Library which span 300 years of newspaper publishing in the UK. The two collections combined contain nearly 3 million pages and 40 million articles and provide an enormous resource for research on all subjects including history, literature, social sciences, business and economics and the history of journalism and advertising.
17th and 18th Century Burney Collections Newspapers represents the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media available from the British Library and includes more than 1,000 pamphlets, proclamations, newsbooks and newspapers from the period. This collection helps researchers chart the development of the newspaper as we now know it, beginning with irregularly published transcriptions of Parliamentary debates and proclamations to coffee house newsbooks and finally arriving at newspaper in its current form.
19th Century British Library Newspapers offers national, regional and local 19th century British newspapers, taken directly form the holdings of the British Library. The collection contains over two million pages from forty eight titles and unlocks extensive newspaper contact which is invaluable for the researching and studying of 19th century history. 19th Century British Library Newspapers is available to all Further and Higher Education UK institutions free of charge thanks to funding from JISC Collections as part of its £22 million digitization programme.
