NewsVault Special Collection: The History of Modern Germany

European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany and the eastern German Democratic Republic. The Fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th 1989 began a chain of irreversible events leading to signing of the Unification Treaty. Midnight on October 3rd 1990, saw the two states become officially reunified, to form the Germany that we know today.

World-reaching attitudes towards the players and events were reflected by the British Press, and the articles below from Gale NewsVault give you a sample of the commentary and images - as it happened.
